IPL (Indian Premier League) nowadays known as TATA IPL, as TATA is the official title sponsor of the IPL. It is the most popular cricket league in the world organised every year in India by BCCI, where players of different nations play together with each other.
BCCI (Board of Control for cricket in India) discovered the idea in 2007, of having a tournament where players from all over the world come to India and play together. In 2007, after India’s win in T20 World Cup, BCCI announced a T20 format tournament where different franchises belongs to different parts of India and named IPL (Indian Premier League). ICC (International Cricket Council) clears mostly all the international tours schedule at the time of TATA IPL, so that all the players from different nations can participate in IPL (Indian Premier League).
The teams are selected on the basis of action held by BCCI, where owners of different franchise bids for their players. The 8 teams to play the first edition of the TATA IPL in 2008 are Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Daredevils (DD), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Deccan Chargers (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the inaugural TATA IPL tournament in 2008 under the captaincy of Late Shane Warne, since then Rajasthan Royals (RR) is waiting for their 2nd TATA IPL trophy till now.
Two new franchises Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala are added to the league before 2011 edition. After just one season Kochi Tuskers Kerala is terminated because the owners didn’t paid the fees to BCCI, also Deccan Chargers is removed from the league in September 2012 as they don’t found the new owners for the team. Sunrisers Hyderabad took the place of Deccan Chargers TATA IPL in 2013.
In 2015 TATA IPL edition, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are banned for two years because of their involvement in Fixing and Batting scandal. These two teams are replaced by Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) and Gujarat Lions (GL).
The venue of TATA IPL 2020 is shifted to UAE (United Arab Emirates) because of Corona Pandemic. In 2021, BCCI announced that from the next season two more teams are added to the league, namely Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Gujarat Titans won TATA IPL trophy in their very first season in 2022 defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) in final at Narendra Modi Stadium of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
In next season also, Gujarat Titans (GT) managed to the finals of TATA IPL 2023, but loose to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in an amazing match. In the Last Season of the TATA IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at MA Chidambaram Stadium, making it 3rd TATA IPL title for KKR.
