We know, ICC (International Cricket Council) is the administration board for cricket in the world. Just like it, ACC (Asian Cricket Council) is the board for cricket in Asia continent. In 1984, ACC announced to organize a multi-nation tournament for the Asian countries which are the members of council. Asia Cup is only of its kind tournament organized to contest between different countries of a continent.
The first Asia Cup was organized in Sharjah in UAE (United Arab Emirates) in 1984. India didn’t attended the 1986 Asia Cup because of some cricketing conflicts with Sri Lanka. Pakistan didn’t attended the 1990-91 Asia Cup because of its stressful political relations with India. Again, the Asia Cup which is supposed to be held in 1993 was cancelled because of same reasons. Then, after 2000, it was held in every 4 years but in 2008, ACC announced that the Asia Cup will be organised in every 2 years.
Then from 2016 onwards, ICC interfered and made a rule that Asia Cup will be organized in ODI (One Day International) and T20I (Twewnty20 International) format in rotations depending on the Upcoming big ICC tournament, seeing Asia Cup as a preparatory tournament. And then 2016 Asia cup was first one to be organized in T20I format because of upcoming ICC T20 WC. In 2020 and 2021 this tournament was cancelled because of Corona Pandemic.
