Indian cricket has entered a new era as Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. The 26-year-old opener will lead the side in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, marking his first assignment as skipper in the 50-over format. Gill already holds the role of Test captain and serves as vice-captain in T20Is, making him a central figure in India’s leadership group.

The decision, taken by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, was made with the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup in mind. With ODIs being played less frequently compared to other formats, the selectors wanted to give Gill enough time to settle into the role and prepare well ahead of the tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Despite stepping down as captain, Rohit Sharma has been named in the squad as a batter alongside Virat Kohli. Both senior players are returning to the ODI setup after the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain for the series.

Gill, though relatively inexperienced as a captain in List A cricket with just six games under his belt, has already shown promise in leadership. In his first Test series as captain, he guided India to a 2-2 draw in England and recently led the team to a dominant innings victory over West Indies. With 55 ODIs, 2775 runs, and eight centuries to his name, Gill has already established himself as one of India’s most consistent young batters.

Speaking after his appointment, Gill expressed pride in leading India in ODIs and highlighted the 2027 World Cup as his ultimate goal. “Captaining India in ODIs is a huge honor. Our biggest target is the 2027 World Cup, and every series from now will be part of that preparation,” he said.
