After the West Indies’ chaotic loss in the first Test, Australia heads to St. George’s to win the series and improve their WTC standing. The second Test starts on July 3.
Before the big match, Australia got some good news: Steve Smith is back from his injury. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Smith said he’s not in pain and is ready for the second Test.
“For me, it’ll just feel like training as normal, I think. I don’t really feel any pain or anything. (It’s) just getting used to the splint and the slight limited movement. It’s not too bad, I’ve got a lot of movement there now, so that feels good. Hitting the ball felt completely fine,” Smith told ESPNcricinfo.
Smith got hurt during the 2025 WTC final against South Africa at Lord’s. He injured his finger while fielding.

He had to leave the field for scans, which showed a dislocation but no break. He missed the rest of the final. Luckily he didn’t need surgery and has recovered quickly, returning to form just two weeks after the injury.
Smith said he feels good batting but might not field in the slips for the second Test. He’ll probably field in a different position as a precaution.
“Fielding some balls in front of the wicket will probably be the strangest thing for me, I don’t think I’ve ever done that in a Test match. Fielding at either probably mid-on or mid-off or fine leg is a bit different to standing at the second or first slip,” he added.

Smith’s return is big for Australia, especially after their batting collapse in the first innings where they scored only 180, their lowest score in the West Indies in 30 years.
